How to become a Notary Public

Effective June 15, 2006 pursuant to Act 423, the notary exam will be given twice a year, on the first Saturday in June and December. This process is handled by the Parish Application Committee which is appointed by the 22nd Judicial Court. The Parish Application Committee will authorize qualified applicants to sit for the state notary examination. Application by petition must be made to the 22nd Judicial District Court, together with the required supporting documentation set forth in LA RS 35:191. A form for the petition to be appointed a Notary Public is available in the Clerk's Civil Department or in the Judicial Administrator's office located on the 3rd floor of the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center, 701 N. Columbia St., Covington, LA 70433. After you have taken the test, the Commission will notify you as to whether or not you passed.

If you pass, you will then have to submit the following to the Clerk of Court:
- Bond in the sum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000.00), approved and recorded by the Clerk of Court; and
- Oath filed with the Clerk of Court.

Submit to the Secretary of State's office:
- the approved and recorded bond;
- the recorded oath; and
- the Judge's certificate or letter of certification and the official signature.

If you need additional information about the notary test, contact Janet Talley with the Judicial Administrator's office at (985) 809-5302.
